| One of my most favorite trips was a day trip run by Tickner's Canoe of Old Forge and the Adirondack Scenic Railroad! Adirondack Splendor By Joe Geronimo My last trip to the Adirondack’s was twenty-two years ago when my family and I would spend summer vacations at “Whispering Pine Cottages” in Lake Luzurne along the upper Hudson River. Twenty-two years later I would return, but only for a day. During the summer months of 2009, myself, friends Jerry Albertie and Joshua Blay, started to plan our “River and Rail” kayak trip on the Moose River. All three of us share a similar passion for the outdoors, kayaking and railroads. Taking charge of the planning, I booked our trip by contacting Tickner’s Canoes of Old Forge, where reservations were made for their “River and Rail” package, a service offered to kayaker’s and canoer’s in conjunction with the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Early in the morning hours of September 26, we snaked our way north along Route 12 enroute to Old Forge under a thick cover of fog. As the morning progressed the fog began to burn off, while the warm rays of sun would make for an absolutely gorgeous day in the Adirondack Park. Upon our arrival, at Tickner’s we unloaded our kayaks and geared up for the start of our six-mile paddle down the middle branch of the Moose River. With the river peaceful and lazy as we had hoped, we could see the beginnings of fall. As some of the oranges and reds were beginning to pop, our journey also provided us with some interesting wildlife in the form of Ducks, Blue Herons and Red Tail Hawks. Paddling and drifting along the “Moose” all the way down to “Whitewater” a secluded takeout along the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Our train arrived right on schedule, with the conductor greeting us with a big smile. He then began to assist in loading our kayaks along with other river goers into a modified baggage car for our trip back to the Thendera train station. The Adirondack Scenic’s operation out of Saranac Lake is under attack with activist trying to make the railroad a bike trail from Saranac Lake to Old Forge. http://www.adirondackexplorer.org/stories/bikepath.phphttp://www.flickr.com/photos/jgeronimo_photography/sets/72157625395879167/ | |
