This was an outstanding paddle, from last fall in the Adirondacks. Sorry it has taken me soo long to get these trips off of my camera! This started out as a trek to Lake Placid for a paddle, but it was such a nice day and the views of the lake that I was getting from the road made this stop irresistable! There is a put-in at "First Pond" on Route 3.
Click here for directions to put-in
From the boat launch, head North under the Route 3 bridge. From here you can explore (there are many rock outcroppings & small islands that are cool to explore), or head towards the North Shore and find your way West till the water begins to head North again. Shortly after this, there is a great little rocky island to explore, the water allows you to pull up right onto the rock, a natural boat launch! The water then begins to head West again, and once you come to the next turn, you are at the "main Lake". Almost directly North from you, you can see a towering rock formation. I am hoping to bring gear next time we take this paddle and do some climbing, it looks great for it!. From here we headed North East, there are several very cool islands in the middle of the Lake here. Some looked as if they would be excellent camping spots. I would say that its about a mile from launch to the Lake, but between the twists & turns and islands, this paddle is a pleasure. The water is so clean, I couldnt resist a swim, it was a little chilly though (it was almost October!)

I love being up there. Do you know if there is any camping allowed on those lakes or any sites on the lake? Kayaking and camping is on my to do list for all of this season.

I love it up there too. I wish I could find work up there, because I would live there in a heartbeat. As far as camping, yes, you can. At first I thought it was just a come as you go type thing, but it is a DEC campground. The island sites look great. With some of the island sites, you have the whole island to yourself. Here is the link for the campground info, but you have to book through Reserve America. Here is a great map of the entire area., you can see that Lower Saranac Lake connects with Middle Saranac Lake, the trip possibilities are endless! I think that we may be going sometime this summer, maybe we should make it a board trip and have a whole island to ourselves!

Sure, the pics were taken on Lower Saranac Lake, just outside of the town of Saranac Lake in Northern New York (Adirondack Park). You can get a PDF image of the entire area by clicking the link in my post that was just before your reply, titled "here is a great map of the entire area". Just click on that and have a look! Happy Paddling!

If living and working in the dak's was actually possible, what a life it would be. Unless you want to be a waiter or a cook near Placid however, there's just not much up there.
